PHILADELPHIA – November 19, 2021 – Today Senator Sharif Street announced more than $1 Million in state grants to improve infrastructure and recreation in the Third Senatorial District.
Brewerytown Garden Preservation will receive $125,000 and is a critical resource in addressing food insecurity and food deserts. The garden preservation provides ample growing space for 80 individual beds, a weekly farm stand, CSA program, and many community, cultural, and educational events.
“These critical investments in hard and human infrastructure must happen with the communities they impact at the table,” said Senator Street, “supporting community gardens not only expands access to healthy food but also provides safe spaces for our community to connect. The goal of the Broad, Germantown and Erie project has been to reflect the vision that the community has for their neighborhood in the upgrades to the public spaces and safety features at the BGE intersection. Both happened with input from the community. Our process will continue to put people first.”
The Broad, Germantown and Erie (BGE) Project will receive $900,000 for Phase 2 of development. Phase 1 of the project saw improvements to Erie Avenue, SEPTA station ADA accessibility, and public space improvements at Butler Triangle. Phase 2 will be focused on Germantown Avenue and will further study traffic safety and the operation of traffic and will be developed in partnership with Senator Street, the Office of the Mayor, and PennDOT with heavy emphasis on community engagement and collaboration.
